Dental emergencies can be a scary and stressful experience for both children and their parents. As a parent, it's important to know what to do and where to go in the event of a dental emergency. If your child is in pain, has a toothache, abscessed tooth, or similar dental issue, contact our pediatric dentist in Cincinnati Ohio immediately.
At Westside Pediatric Dentistry in Cincinnati, we strive to provide same-day emergency pediatric dentistry whenever possible. Our goal is to facilitate quick and effective treatment to get your child out of pain as soon as we can. We encourage you to contact our office immediately to contact one of our staff. Even if it’s after hours, someone will return your call as soon as possible.
There are several types of dental emergencies that we commonly see in kids, including toothaches, broken or chipped teeth, knocked-out teeth, and injuries to the soft tissues of the mouth, such as the tongue or lips. These emergencies can be caused by a variety of factors, such as accidents, sports injuries, or tooth decay.
Most pediatric dental emergencies are due to accidents like playing on a trampoline, getting hit at a soccer or baseball game, or just slipping next to the pool. In fact, most children’s dental emergencies happen during the summer months while people are enjoying the nice weather outdoors!
If your child is experiencing dental pain or discomfort, there are some things you can do to help them feel better before you make it to our office. However, delaying treatment can lead to further complications and more extensive treatment in the future. Use these methods for interim relief but schedule an appointment as soon as possible.
First, administer an over-the-counter pain reliever, such as Motrin or Tylenol, as directed. Second, apply a cold compress to the side of their mouth (up to 20 minutes at a time) to alleviate the swelling.
If your child’s tooth is broken or chipped, locate the missing fragment and place it in a container filled with milk, then bring it to our office.
During an emergency dental appointment, our dental team will assess your child's condition and provide prompt and appropriate treatment. Treatment may include medication to manage pain, repairing or replacing damaged teeth, or providing same-day care as needed.
