Your First Dental Visit

Taking your child to the dentist for the first time can be an intimidating experience, both for the child and the parent. At Westside Pediatric Dentistry in Cincinnati, Dr. Petr Vaughan understands the importance of creating a positive experience for children during their first dental appointment.

When Should My Child See a Dentist?

Experts recommend bringing children for their first dental checkup by the time their first tooth erupts or their first birthday.

Creating a Positive, Fun Environment

One of the key elements in creating a positive dental experience is taking the time to get to know your child and building a rapport with them before they experience dental issues like toothaches or injuries. Dr. Vaughan and his team make it a priority to establish a relationship with each child, talking to them in a friendly, age-appropriate manner and explaining what will happen during the appointment. This helps to put children at ease and makes the experience less stressful for everyone.

We Move at Your Child’s Pace

Age-appropriate care is an essential aspect of a child’s first dental appointment. Dr. Vaughan and his team are experienced in providing dental care to children of all ages and know how to tailor their approach to the specific needs of each child. For example, if your child is very young, they may not be able to sit still for long periods, so the appointment may be shorter and more focused on familiarizing them with the dental experience. Alternatively, if your child is older and has had previous dental care, Dr. Vaughan will adapt the appointment to suit their needs and comfort level.

At Westside Pediatric Dentistry, we believe that every child deserves a healthy smile. That's why we are committed to providing accessible dental care to families in our community. Whether you have insurance coverage or not, we will work with you to ensure that your child receives the care they need to maintain a healthy and beautiful smile.

What to Expect

What typically happens during a child’s first dental checkup at Westside Pediatric Dentistry? The first step is usually a thorough examination of your child’s teeth and gums. Dr. Vaughan will look for any signs of decay, gum disease, or other oral health issues. He will also monitor their oral development and growth patterns. If necessary, he may take x-rays to get a better view of your child’s tooth eruption patterns and to screen for cavities.

Depending on your child’s age and comfort level, our dental hygienist will clean your child’s teeth, removing any plaque or tartar buildup and polishing their smile afterward. This is an essential step in maintaining good oral health and preventing cavities. We will also talk to them about good dental hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing, and will provide advice on how to care for your child’s teeth between appointments. We may also recommend fluoride treatments or dental sealants to help prevent cavities before they start.

Finally, Dr. Vaughan and his team will make sure that your child leaves the appointment with a positive experience. They may give your child a toy or sticker to reward them for their good behavior and help to make the appointment a fun and memorable visit.

Plan a Checkup Every Six Months

We want every child to enjoy a healthy smile and a positive outlook on dental care. That starts with early exams and routine checkups. For best results, plan a dental visit twice a year.
